Personal Background
Jordi is a 21 year old man who was born in and currently lives in Barcelona Spain. Jordi got into photography at age 18 through cinema. He enjoyed movies and television shows and took an interest and focus on photography. He bought his first camera and started experimenting with photo and video but didn’t take it seriously until three years later when he opened his instagram account. Over the span of five years before his social media explosion Jordi worked as a freelancer, before setting up his own audiovisual production company (Kolitic Visuals) with his brother.
Style
Jordi uses his images to tell a story as well as focusing on aspects like color, composition, and lighting. He uses everyday objects to create interesting and meaningful photos. In other words he doesn’t usually go out traveling and looking for a photo instead he creates it. His style emphasizes visual impact, which focuses on internal dynamism, composition, and depth. He uses objects to create unique frames for his photos and uniquely captures light to add interest to otherwise normal photographs.
Philosophy
One of the main influences behind Jordi’s style is simplicity. With the style he takes he can take pictures close to home without having to travel the world in search of specific shots. Therefore it's logistically easier and plus his photos are fairly low budget and don’t require many resources. Also because of the way he creates images there isn’t an insane amount of complicated editing he has to do. Jordi uses his photos to comment on a variety of issues, recently he used photography to show support for the black lives matter movement. Jordi really wants to inspire other photographers out there with a new creative approach to photography that is very different from some of the well known forms of photography. It shows that to take good pictures a person doesn’t have to travel the world but instead use their own creativity which is the essence of photography overall.
Influences
Jordi work has truly been an inspiration for me. His work really shows how key creativity is in photography above all else. Without creativity no matter where you go, how expensive your gear is, how good your editing is. Without creative thoughtful shots your pictures are easily lost in the sea. Jordi has made me focus inwards on my own creative thoughts and using the objects and scenes around me in new and interesting ways. I think he has really inspired me to change my focus of photography and incorporate those creative type shots into my pictures going forward.
This was one of the harder ones to recreate. For starters it requires three people one to hold the knife, one to take the picture and hold a orange, and another with the spray bottle and another fruit slice. It was very difficult to put together all of the moving parts of this shot. Especially getting the spray of water just right so it was visible but not to intrusive. I still think it could have been improved upon. There are many obvious differences between the photos the fruit, the angle, but overall I think I was able to capture a very similar effect.
This photo was deceptively hard to recreate. For starters the angle that he used I couldn't really get as there was not enough space behind my sink and I did this shoot solo. So obvious difference is the angle I wasn't able to get as low as he did. Also the coloring of the images is slightly different mine is more red then his maybe its just my skin tone but the hands themselves look wildly different. However, I am quite proud of this shot as it took a lot of balancing the shutter speed, ISO, and aperture to get this final effect. I also wasn't able to get the bubbles in but such is life.
This one I think was the easiest to recreate. While I wasn't able to get the dramatic sunset that he did I still think it turned out fairly well. Differences are the lack of sky and sunset, however hopefully you can tell that this image was taken at sunset by the way the scene is lit. However, besides the sky I would say this is a pretty faithful recreation. The surface wasn't nearly as reflective which is a let down but I am quite proud of how the water looks slowly dripping out of the bottle. My only regret is not making the pool of water bigger.
This picture while not an exact replica of the original in my opinion is still very good. I am proud of how the water droplets look suspended mid flight. I really wish I could have gotten that dramatic sky in the background however, where I live there is no good place to get such views. If I were to do this picture over again I would have tried to find maybe a parking lot and done it there instead. However, there is quite a bit of water involved with this shot which just added tot he difficulty.
While these images are very different they both convey the same feel and use the exact same technique. I didn't have access to the exact conditions that Jordi had available (it didn't rain) however I used shadows and the sun to convey a very similar effect. Both pictures use the same simple editing trick having the person step out of the boots and leaving them in the same place for the next shot. Its really simple but creates amazing pictures that have a creepy feel to them. Overall while not very similar they both convey the same feeling and use similar methods.
Artist Statement
I actually had a lot of fun with this project. I would always see Jordi's work on social media and think to myself "I could do something like that" but never really put in any effort. Now I know its a lot harder then it looks to create master level shots like his. That being said it was a fun and create experience and introduction to the world of creative photography. I had so much fun and I can't wait to apply the skills and ideas that got from this project into future photography projects. Also I learned a lot about editing from this project especially about gradients and blending photos together. To me all of these pictures represent creativity and the freedom of ones mind and imagination culminating and expressing itself through photography.
